The life, times and ramblings of MasterCJ
Reptillian Conspiracy@ 11/03/10 10:27 am
I had a revelation in IRC just now. I'll put it here so other people can see it and agree with me.

<MasterCJ> also i have a new theory about japanese people
<MasterCJ> and the cold
<MasterCJ> my theory is that they can't really feel the cold
<MasterCJ> but they don't want the rest of the world to know
<cryptw> lol
<MasterCJ> so they wear jackets as soon as it's "cold"
<MasterCJ> and keep wearing the same amount of clothing
<MasterCJ> no matter how cold it actually gets
<MasterCJ> cause i go out sometimes and it's like 12 degrees
<MasterCJ> so there's groups of people everywhere going "OOH SAMUI SAMUI" and i'm like wtf it's not cold
<MasterCJ> then it'll be like 5 degrees
<MasterCJ> and they'll be in the same clothes
<MasterCJ> doing the same thing
<MasterCJ> so they just wear them to make the rest of the world think they can feel the cold
<MasterCJ> it's all a front
<MasterCJ> wake up sheeple!

I'm on to something here.
Absorbtion Method@ 11/03/10 08:51 am
I've gathered dumps of a few of the larger anime/drama/etc torrent sites (NyaaTorrents, Anirena, Scarywater, BakaBT, d-addicts, a few group sites) and will be putting them all into Jishaku sometime soon. Pretty soon we'll have the most content available in one place. Personally I welcome our new data-slurping overlord.
Scarywater Closing Shop@ 07/03/10 07:02 pm
Scarywater has been an important part of the fansubbing community for quite some time, around 7 years. It is with some disappointment that we will see it disappear into the ether that is the internet on the 12th of this month. Never fear however, for I have archived all the torrents and made them available (with a little bit of meta-data thrown in the mix) in case anyone needs them for whatever reason. You can find them at http://mastercj.net/scarywater/. There's a readme as well, I suggest you take a look at it if you're considering using them for any programmatic purposes, as it explains the log file format and the extra metadata contained therein.

EDIT: I've made a torrent of this. You can get it from my website or NyaaTorrents. In somewhat related news, this will be the first torrent on Jishaku with more than one file source. Fun stuff.
Jishaku Wordpress Plugin@ 14/02/10 03:03 am
I made this plugin for Wordpress the other day that displays a configurable list of torrents from Jishaku. I'll be setting up a CMS or something for a separate part of Jishaku to deal with extensions, plugins, API usage examples, etc. When that's done, this plugin will be moving house so to speak. It's in use on the Nekomimi Fansubs website already, you'll see it in the sidebar.
Lunch Date (09/02/2010)@ 10/02/10 02:57 am
Went for lunch today with Loliki and Izark. We were going to this all-you-can-eat pizza place, but it turned out they changed their schedule so the buffet is only open on Mondays and Thursdays. That made me a sad panda. Instead we went to a little traditional kind of place nearby. Loliki and I had fried rice, Izark had some form of noodle dish. It was pretty good all up, but now I have this kind of empty spot inside me that can only be filled by copious amounts of pizza. Next time, I suppose.

It's also been raining at inopportune times. Nothing strange here at this time of year apparently.

I'm yet to use the rice cooker Loliki has lent to me, but I'll probably lumber my way down to the shopping center tomorrow and pick up some rice/etc. Pretty sure I'll be able to cook vegetables in it too, so that'll mean a lot more variety in my meals :D.
Indonet@ 08/02/10 09:04 pm
Today I'll let you all in on a little secret. Stay quiet about it for me, OK? I'm using "appropriated" internet here (zomg unexpected). Anyway, the practice of "borrowing" a wireless connection is nothing new to me, but doing it for extended periods of time is something of an acquired taste. I'll outline what I've discovered about my local wifi environment.

WARNING: TECHNICAL DETAILS FOLLOW!

There's a wireless network here comprised of 3 (maybe 4, there's one I haven't been able to connect to properly) WAPs (Wireless Access Points). They all run their own DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), DNS (Domain Name System), etc, but are connected to a central network. The details you get from DHCP on these things generally consists of an IP in the 192.168.1.0/24 subnet with a default gateway and DNS server in the 192.168.2.0/24 subnet. Of course this means that you can't access the internet until you mess with the gateway and DNS address... I believe this was an attempt at stopping people from using the internet... I'm not quite sure. That about covers the configuration.

What I did was set up one of my laptops as a gateway, with one interface associated to whichever wireless network has the best signal at the time and one in Master mode (hostap). I set up squid, dnsmasq, transparent redirection of web requests through squid, etc to try to take as much strain off the network I'm "liberating" as possible. It doesn't help. I get maybe 20k/s most of the time. I've seen it jump up to 200k/s at one point, but that only lasted maybe 15 minutes and it was back to a crawl.

As much as it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not. I quite like this set up, even if I'm not a big fan of the connection I'm on. I've learned about hostap, Master mode, some squid tricks I was ignorant to and a few dnsmasq config options I wasn't aware even existed. Plus I don't have to pay for internet. Can't really beat that.
